Hire with Confidence:
Video-Based eLearning
Video-Based eLearning
Meet a virtual consultant who can assess your organization's hiring practices in a five minute check-in.
This interactive eLearning experience was developed in collaboration with Kizuna, a startup on a mission to empower employers with research-backed hiring strategies.
Audience: HR professionals
Responsibilities: Action Mapping, eLearning Development, Graphic Design, Instructional Design, Needs Analysis,
SME Collaboration, Video Editing / Production, xAPI Integration
Tools Used: Articulate Storyline 360, Canva, ChatGPT, Figma, Mindmeister, Vyond, Veracity Learning Record Store (LRS)
Over 70 million Americans have a criminal record.
93% of employers run background checks.
So, what happens once records are reported?
Companies struggle to determine if candidates pose an actual risk. In many cases, people with records face barriers to employment—even when laws exist to protect their right to fair hiring. The result?
27% of formerly incarcerated people are unemployed (43% for Black women) while many employers are unintentionally violating the law and missing out on qualified candidates.
This isn’t a policy issue, but a knowledge gap.
I partnered with Kizuna to design a scalable learning solution that helps employers:
Assess their current hiring strategy
Break down hiring ordinances into actionable steps
Earn recognition for best practices
In this scenario-based eLearning experience, HR professionals can evaluate each stage of their hiring process, from posting a job to extending a conditional offer and conducting individualized assessments—all in five minutes.
Because compliance shouldn't be a mystery, and opportunity shouldn’t be out of reach.
I partnered with subject matter experts to assess training needs and develop an action map, leveraging AI throughout the storyboarding and design process to accelerate development.
After an initial discovery session with Kizuna’s founder, I identified a key knowledge gap: many employers are unaware of evolving laws that protect candidates with a criminal record during the hiring process. Recognizing a need for compliance-focused training, we agreed on a proposal envisioning an eLearning simulation framed as a virtual consultation. Together, we developed an action map defining the project’s overarching goal and specific actions required to achieve it.
Guided by the action map, I scripted scenarios around key decision points. I used ChatGPT to support my understanding of laws and regulations related to the hiring process and reframe compliance as a strategic advantage. Facilitating iterative feedback with Kizuna stakeholders, I refined the experience to ensure the final product was practical and aligned with company goals.
I created a style guide to establish a cohesive design, defining the color palette, font families, and button styles.
I customized badges in Canva that learners can earn based on their performance, enhancing engagement and motivation.
I used Figma to create detailed prototypes that refined the visual layout for each slide type, ensuring consistency.
With an information-heavy storyboard, this project challenged me to turn dense legal guidance into clear, empathetic, and engaging visuals. I turned to ChatGPT for support, describing each scene so it could create infographics aligned with my project’s tone, style, and color palette.
I created an interactive prototype in Articulate Storyline 360 to test functionality and gather feedback from both instructional designers and subject matter experts. This feedback was instrumental in refining the user experience.
“I think if a learner gets something wrong, it might be worth it for them to hear the explanation again, because repetition would reinforce the learning.”
Instructional Designer
“A few times I found myself wanting to go back to a previous screen.”
Subject Matter Expert
“Learners might not be clear on which answers they got right or wrong along the way if someone isn’t fully listening and just moves on.”
Instructional Designer
I added stopping points where users can choose to continue the learning experience or replay a video, increasing accessibility.
I incorporated a compliance report giving users the opportunity to replay key videos related to each question.
I added a slide that reviews how the learner performed on each question.
This project combines animated Vyond videos with interactive assessment questions to deliver a personalized learning experience.
Mutlimedia Assets:
Clear visuals paired with narration support dual-channel processing, keeping learner attention and reducing cognitive load.
Individualized Feedback:
Learners earn badges for best practices based on their responses.
Compliance Report:
A compliance report helps learners understand how to improve.
xAPI Integration:
Scores are sent from Storyline to a LRS, enabling data-driven insights.
Importance of Feedback: Ongoing feedback informed iterative improvements. Collaboration and user testing ensured the final product was polished, engaging, and instructionally sound.
AI in the Design Process: I leveraged AI as a creative partner throughout design and development to enhance efficiency, ideation, and problem-solving. AI tools supported rapid prototyping, content generation, and visual design.
Accessibility: I used Articulate Storyline’s accessibility features and sought feedback from professionals in the ID community to ensure the project is screen-reader compatible, includes closed captions, and passes color contrast checks.
"My company engaged Julia to create an educational compliance assessment on fair chance laws, and the result exceeded all expectations. She delivered an exceptionally polished, interactive experience that seamlessly blended visuals, audio, and text in a way I haven't seen before. The quality and creativity of her work truly set a new standard for what instructional design can be.
Beyond her technical skills, Julia was an absolute pleasure to work with. She grasped our objectives in just one meeting and consistently came prepared with substantial progress and thoughtful questions. She was respectful of my time, making every interaction count while doing impressive independent work between meetings. I gave her creative freedom, and she ran with it beautifully."
